Locate your water filter

If your refrigerator has a water filter, it’s important to change it regularly. Most filters should be changed every 6 months. Depending on the model of your refrigerator, the water filter may be located in different places.

Some refrigerators have the water filter located in the front, near the bottom. Others have the water filter located in the back, near the top. To find out where your water filter is located, consult your owner’s manual or look for a water filter icon on your refrigerator.

Once you’ve found the location of your water filter, you can begin to change it.

Remove the old water filter

Open the fridge and locate the water filter. The location will vary depending on the model of your refrigerator, but is usually either in the kickplate at the front of the fridge, or in the back corner near the top.

Unscrew or push button to release filter. If your filter has a protective cap, remove this first.

Put a bowl or bucket under the filter to catch any water that drips out when you remove it.

Remove old filter and discard according to manufacturer’s instructions – do not reuse!

Insert the new water filter

To ensure your refrigerator always dispenses fresh, clean water, you should change its water filter every 6 months or when the “change filter” indicator light comes on, whichever occurs first. Replacing your water filter is easy—simply follow these four steps.

1. Before you get started, find your refrigerator’s model number so you can purchase the correct replacement filter.
2. Once you have the right replacement filter, open your refrigerator’s exterior door and locate the cartridge housing in the top right corner of the interior.
3. To remove the old filter, rotate it to the left until it stops then pull it out of the housing. Some filters may require an additional quarter-turn to release them.
4. Insert the new filter into the housing and rotate it to the right until it stops—do not overtighten.

Flush the water line

After you have located the water filter, it is time to flush the water line. This is an important step because it will remove any contaminants that may be present in the water line. To flush the water line, turn on the cold water faucet that is nearest to the refrigerator. Place a bowl under the faucet to catch any water that may drip from the faucet. Allow the water to run for 2-3 minutes or until it runs clear.

Replace the filter cover

1. To find your refrigerator model number, look up and behind the control panel, or inside the refrigerator compartment.

2. Locate your filter cover. The cover is usually located in the upper-right or upper-left corner of the refrigerator compartment behind the kickplate, or in the base grille below the door.

3. Remove and discard the old filter cartridge:

a. If your filter has an airtight seal, hold it with a towel and twist it counterclockwise to release it from the housing. If your filter does not have an airtight seal, hold it with one hand and push down on the release tab with your other hand to release it from the housing.
b. Grasp the used filter cartridge and pull it straight out of the housing. If resistance is met, turn it to release it from the housing O-ring before pulling it out.

4. Install a new filter:

a. Align arrows on new filter cartridge with arrows on interior of housing, then insert new filter into housing until it stops. For filters without arrows, insert new filter until you hear an audible snap or feel resistance when pushing up on bottom of new filter cartridge to snap into place in top of housing O-ring

Test your water

To test your water:
-Fill a clean glass with cold water from the refrigerator.
-Place a strip of pH paper or test strips in the glass of water.
-Compare the color of the pH paper or test strips to the chart that came with the strips.

If the pH paper or test strips show that your water is below 6.5 or above 8.5, don’t use it to change your filter.
