Unplug your refrigerator and locate the water filter.

Before you begin, unplug your refrigerator. Locate the water filter housing inside your refrigerator. Depending on the model of your refrigerator, the water filter housing may be located in different places. Consult your owner’s manual if you are unsure where to find it.

Once you have located the water filter housing, twist housing to the left to remove it. Pull out the old water filter and discard it properly. Insert a new water filter into the housing and twist it to the right to secure it in place.

Plug your refrigerator back in and flush the new filter by running water through it for several minutes. Your Whirlpool refrigerator is now ready to provide you with fresh, filtered water and ice.

Remove the old water filter and replace it with the new one.

1. To remove the old water filter, turn it to the left to release it from the housing.
2. Pull the filter straight out and discard it.
3. To install the new filter, insert it into the housing and turn it to the right until it’s snug.
4. Reset your refrigerator’s water filter indicator light (usually located near your water dispenser) according to your manufacturer’s instructions, and you’re done!

Reconnect your refrigerator and flush the water line.

Unscrew the cap from the new filter and insert it into the refrigerator. Screw on the cap until it’s hand-tight. Reconnect your refrigerator to the water line and turn on the water by turning the valve clockwise as far as it will go. Flush out two gallons of water or until water runs clear through the Dispenser.

What You’ll Need:
-A new Whirlpool® refrigerator water filter (Part Number 4396841)
-A quarter-inch hex head nut driver
-A clean towel or cloth

Step 1: Locate Your Refrigerator’s Water Filter
Your Whirlpool® refrigerator’s water filter is located in one of two places, depending on the model. For top freezer refrigerators, the filter is located in the back, right corner of the ceiling. For bottom freezer refrigerators, the filter is located behind the kickplate, in front of the bottom shelf.

Step 2: Remove the Old Water Filter
Once you’ve located your refrigerator’s water filter housing, use a quarter-inch hex head nut driver to remove the housing cap. Be careful not to overtighten or cross-thread the housing cap when reinstalling it later. With the cap removed, grab hold of the old filter cartridge and twist it counterclockwise until it releases from the housing. If you have trouble removing the old cartridge, try soaking it in a cup of white vinegar for 15 minutes before attempting to remove it again.

Step 3: Insert the New Water Filter Cartridge
To install your new Whirlpool® refrigerator water filter cartridge, simply insert it into the housing and twist it clockwise until it locks into place. Once you’ve installed your new cartridge, reinstall the housing cap by screwing it on clockwise until snug. Do not overtighten—hand tighten only! NOTE: If you’re having trouble getting your new cartridge to fit snugly into the housing, try soaking it in a cup of cold water for 15 minutes before insertion. This will help expand the cartridge so that it locks into place more easily.
